THINGS ARE GOING DOWN

His Holiness Bhakti Vikas Swami

“Step-by-step, things are going down. Contemporary ISKCON culture is a concoction of something somewhat Western, somewhat Indian, and overall not very compelling or substantial. Recently at the opening of a beautiful new ISKCON temple in South India, the only cultural program for the public was a mantra-rock dance. Maybe that would have been acceptable if many other, more traditionally Vaiṣṇava, presentations had also been organized. But as the only function, it was definitely an imbalance. When preaching becomes substituted by entertainment, we become light, not guru.

Although Śrīla Prabhupāda clearly instructed his disciples to institute varṇāśrama-dharma, the movement that is now being conducted in his name has abandoned this project and is instead heading the opposite way. It is lamentable that despite Śrīla Prabhupāda’s followers being well aware of his order to go back to the land, they are instead returning to their old materialistic ways.”
